The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), the European Magazine Association (EMMA), the European Association of Newspapers (ENPA) and News Media Europe (NME) represent thousands of journalists in Europe, but also dozens of media companies. On April 5, they spread This open letterwhich « diary » bursts. The Bulgarian Union of Publishers (part of which is the publisher of Dnevnik – Economedia) is a member of ENPA.

Dear reader,

Human creativity and culture are the driving force behind innovation, including artificial intelligence (AI).

However, innovations should not be at the expense of human creativity and culture. When artificial intelligence systems operate online copyrighted and original content – including media content – to power their own services, they are wrongly benefited from human labor.

Artificial intelligence poses a double challenge: to protect both the fundamental rights of citizens and the connection between the human content and the machines that use it.

When generative artificial intelligence uses journalistic and editorial materials to create, without permission and remuneration, content that resembles media with minimal costs and without editorial control, we all lose.

We are also witnessing the anxious growth of misinformation on the Internet, nourished by AI – by generating a realistic but misleading content that spreads faster than it can be checked.

Bulgarians are up to date with the EU for artificial intelligence, but there is also a surprise

This national and European legislation does not have enough stable protection mechanisms to ensure that both creators and citizens will benefit fairly from the development of AI, with the necessary transparency, accountability and remuneration of rights – all of them are crucial.

We strongly believe that everyone should benefit from artificial intelligence – both citizens and content providers. After all, the professional cultural and creative content is the essential raw material that feeds the revolution of AI – without it there can be no quality artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence can be a force for good if specific risks are prevented.

We urge the new European Commission to act now to support the prosperity and sustainability of European media, culture, information and democratic health of our societies.
