David Popovici, champion and generosity

The Olympic, World and European Champion at Swimming David Popovici raised 173,000 euros in the ‘Ambassador for Home’ campaign carried out by the Hope and Homes for Children Foundation by donating the equipment at the award ceremony at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, a statement said.

‘Hope and Homes for Children Romania marks in 2024 a historical moment: the most donation campaign with card from natural persons, for 40 days -‘ home ambassador ‘. When we build a house, we build a man. In the center of the campaign were five public reference figures-David Popovici, Amalia Enache, Alexandru Tomescu, Mihai Morar and Marius Manole-who, by their involvement, became symbols of solidarity and support for vulnerable children in Romania. Through a symbolic, profound and exciting gesture, David Popovici-double world and Olympic champion-donated his equipment at the awards ceremony at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, turning it into a support message and an exhortation. In just 10 days, David mobilized over 8,000 donors and collected 173,000 euros, giving a new sense to his victories in the pool, who became victories for children without a family ‘, the statement said.

Under the umbrella of the campaign, the five ambassadors managed to mobilize a total of 14,600 people and 28 companies, collecting together over 590,000 euros.

With this money, in November 2024, Hope and Homes for Children started the construction of a family house in Sector 5 in Bucharest, for 11 children with special needs. The new house will offer them not only a roof over their heads, but a space adapted to their needs, to grow, learn and develop their potential. This house marks the closure of the last placement center in Sector 5 of the Capital, a symbol of an outdated system, which must leave room for modern and efficient solutions for child protection.

In recent years, David Popovici (20 years old) has constantly participated in different charitable campaigns, among his donations being one of the gold medals conquered by him at the World Natation Championships of 2022.
