Dave Shapiro on the private jet fallen to San Diego after touching the high voltage cables

Before crashing into the houses on the outskirts of San Diego, the private jet hit the high tension cables. This could be the main cause ofplane crash in the middle of the night Between Thursdays and Fridays (at 3:46 rooms, 12.46 in Italy) which set about ten homes, wounded eight people and destroyed several parked cars. There are six victims, all on board the aircraft. Among these there is also Dave Shapiro, the 42 -year -old music producer, owner and pilot of the plane.
Who was
Shapiro, known in the Heavy Metal and Hard Rock panorama and because he also represented « Sum 41 », owned a pilot license – as the Courier A few hours after the accident -. The Sound Talent Group music agency confirmed that Shapiro died in the crash together with two employees. « We are devastated by the loss of our co -founder, of our colleagues and friends », reads the press release of the agency founded by Shapiro together with Tim Borror and Matt Andersen.
Flight
The Jet, a 550 cessna in service for 40 years – according to the data of the American Federal Aviationity – took off from Teterboro airport, near New York (but in the state of New Jersey) at 11.15 pm on Thursday 21 May (5:15 am in the morning of May 22 in Italy) and three and a half hours later landed in Wichita, Kansas. Then he left with destination Montgomery Field Airport, St. Diego structure particularly used by private aircraft.
The weather situation
Just before landing and while it was about 9 thousand feet of altitude (2,743 meters), you can hear Shapiro’s voice – at that moment the commands – ask the flight controllers information on the weather conditions around the airport. But the automated system of the airport had not worked for at least one day. « Montgomery’s ASOS system is out of service, » says a controller on the pilot in the audio recordings collected by the Liveatc.
The search for an alternative airport
« I just want to understand what awaits me, » is the laconic comment of Shapiro. « I have the automated weather of Miramar, » replies the flight controller via radio, providing the conditions of the military airport, about 5 kilometers away. There, he continues, « there is a visibility of half a mile (almost 805 meters, editor’s note) and a 200 feet cloudy base ». « Okay, it doesn’t sound reassuring, but we try, » he replies the pilot.
The decision to continue
The controller suggests another stopover with « a little better condition, but not much ». But Shapiro is not convinced. « It is not a better option either, » he communicates, underlining the existence of minimum requirements for landing. And so five kilometers from the airport Il Pilota communicates via radio to all the drivers in the paragraph his intention to land on track 28 of the Montgomery-Gibbs. In the last moments the cessna is proceeding at 225 kilometers per hour and 150 meters above sea level.
The last moments
Immediately after the chaos. The private jet – reports the local authorities – hit at least one high tension cable and, finished out of control, crashed into some houses. The poor visibility may have played a crucial role in the dynamic, as well as the hill that is immediately before the start of the neighborhood. In any case, no alarm is launched by the plane.
Rescue
The firefighters find themselves with a field of debris extended for at least 400 meters, with the kerosene of the aircraft that fell almost everywhere, which also led to the fire of several cars. Damage is also recorded at a certain distance from the impact, so much was violent. The preliminary investigation report, expected in a couple of weeks, could shed light on what happened at the Cessna.
