The ZDF has announced the broadcast of « Dying for Beginner » for Monday, May 5, 2025. The show begins at 8:15 p.m. In the Media library of ZDF it is available from 10 a.m. from Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

The action: what is « dying for beginners » about?
Eric gets into a situation that throws him out of the track when his best friend Alex learns that he is terminally ill. Overwhelmed by the idea of saying goodbye, Eric makes an unusual decision: he applies to a funeral home. In the weeks that follow, Eric, together with Alex ‘pregnant friend Karla, tries to cope with the difficult time. But when Alex ‘death becomes inevitable, heated conflicts break out between his parents and Karla – especially the place of his last resting place. Eric’s life so far is in chaos: he recently gave up his job as a music manager frustrated. Now he stands as a freshly baked undertaker between the disputes and is looking for a solution to enable Alex to say goodbye that he deserves. At the same time, his strict boss Mutz, a man who stubbornly insists on rules and order, demands the highest discipline. Despite all the grief and challenges, Eric succeeds in finding a unique and touching path to say goodbye to his best friend.
Solveig Cornelisen looks on the press page of the ZDF A little further into the depth: « A story can be guessed at, » she overwrites her statement. And then further: In “Dying for Beginner” we accompany Eric, who from one chaos to the next device, while desperately tries to find a way to say goodbye to his terminal friend. His internship with an undertaker, a spontaneous and trend -setting decision, forms the core of this emotional journey. The inspiration comes from Eric Wrede, whose non -fiction book only gives short indications of why he became an undertaker, but still offered a template for this story.
The film tells of dying – and also of survival. He combines pain and hope with moments of unexpected comedy and deep humanity. « Dying for beginners » gives courage and shows that connection and closeness are possible even in difficult times.
« Dying for Beginner » was awarded the golden television builder at the Festival of German Film in Ludwigshafen with the Rheingold and the Biberacher Film Festival.
