During the Second World War, the celebration of Father’s Day was a way to honor US soldiers who were at the front.

In 1972, US President Richard Nixon signed a law that officially approved his father’s third Sunday June. Since then, it has been celebrated by most countries of the world on this day. In 2005, the Ministry of Family, Youth and Sports sent the first project of the Presidential Decree for consideration by the Cabinet of Ministers “About father’s day” but his Decledas « irrelevant ».

Nevertheless, citizens and local authorities actively supported the initiative of the International Center for Parenting, so their father’s day began to be unofficially celebrated on the third Sunday of September.

In 2013, the introduction of the holiday became one of the components of the State Targeted Family Program, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. Then the Ministry of Social Policy developed a third decree of the President « On the Day of Father ». Even approved The government was sent to the fourth President Yanukovych, however, the signing did not happen.

Again, it was decided in 2015 to commemorate his father’s day at the state level. Then Parliament was held hearing « Family Policy of Ukraine – Objectives and Tasks », as a result of which they recommended the President to celebrate his father’s Day annually. The Presidential Administration has positively appreciated the project, but did not reach the signing.

Over the following years, the Father Day was regularly held on the third Sunday of September at the local level. This tradition in 2018 supported 13 city state administrations.

Finally, in 2018, the Ministry of Social Policy developed a fourth decree concerning the celebration of the holiday. The ministry was convinced that it will help to overcome gender stereotypes, because both parents are responsible for raising children.

May 8, 2019 Cabinet of Ministers Finally approved decree « About Father’s Day », and on May 18 he was signed by the fifth President Petro Poroshenko.
