The International Police Organization Interpol has declared anti -mansmate day on 12 May. With ransomware or hostage software, hackers computers or the data on it block and then ask them ransom.
Collected data can ultimately also be leaked, via specialized sites on the Darweb, the non-indexed part of the web that is not just accessible. According to an analysis by Orange Cyberdefense, this happened last year at at least 45 companies from Belgium. « In total last year at least 1.35 Terabyte of data was captured by Belgian organizations, » it says.

Orange Cyberdefense notes an increasing focus of hackers on SMEs: 60 percent of the targeted companies have fewer than 250 employees and a quarter even less than 50. « It is only about known victims, because the real figures are probably a lot higher, » the company says.
Making companies are the largest group of victims with more than a fifth (22 percent). However, Orange Cyberdefense also points to a sharp increase in the financial and insurance sector (13 percent). « That is perhaps due to the extortion of Penbox, a software supplier who collaborates with more than 400 players in the insurance sector. Many organizations saw data appear on the Darkweb, » it sounds.
