Cyclists connected Vukovar and Mostar in memory of the victims of war
Thirty -three cyclists from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Austria successfully completed the Bicycle Caravan of the Mostar – Vukovar friendship, which sent a strong message of peace, friendship and joint memories of the victims of the Homeland War, the organizational committee said on Saturday.
The aim of this cycling caravan was to pay tribute to all the victims of the war in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially those who lost their lives in Vukovar, where about 3,500 people were killed during the quarterly siege, including more than a thousand civilians. The caravan also marked the anniversary of the suffering of 12 Croatian police officers in Borovo Selo.
During a multi -day ride, more than 400 kilometers long, the caravan connected the cities and municip In each place, candles are lit and flowers are laid in memory of the fallen veterans.
A ceremonial welcome in Vukovar was traditionally held on Adica, where the Mayor Ivan Penava and numerous citizens were greeted by the caravan. The Mayor of Penava thanked the cyclists for their arrival, pointing out the importance of a caravan that « in a special way preserves the memory of difficult moments from the past, but also builds bridges for a better future. »
Upon their arrival in Vukovar, the participants paid tribute to Ovcara, the Memorial Cemetery and Trpinjska Road, and on May 2, they participated in a commemoration in Borovo Selo on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of 12 Croatian police officers, officially concluding this year’s event.
– This year, we are filled with emotions and gratitude to our mission – to connect Mostar and Vukovar not only by miles, but with heart, memory and respect – said Toni Zorić, organizer of the caravan and president of the Herzegovinabikka Association.
