Fraudsters hunt for Internet users’ emotions and feed on a media noise
Attacks of this type gain strength around large media events, thanks to which fraudsters use people’s curiosity to lure unconscious users to malicious websites.
– Cybercriminals feed on chaos and curiosity. Every time an important event occurs, we observe a rapid increase in the number of frauds, which are aimed at using public interest – told Politico.eu Rafa Lopez, Security Engineer at Check Point.
Check Point analysts call this phenomenon « Newsproof opportunism »i.e. using loud events to lure your potential victims. This phenomenon was particularly intensified during the Covid-19 pandemic when Google recorded up to 18 million messages a day related to coronavirus, which contained links to malware or were phishing.
