Customs tramps are overshadowed by American olive twig in NATO – the world
The US Secretary of State Marko Rubio used a more conciliatory tone in a conversation with allies to NATO, but the growing transatlantic abyss is hard to bridge.
The US Secretary of State Marko Rubio arrived in the Seat of NATO in Brussels with a message that was to calm nervous ministers of foreign ministers, but also with solid instructions for them: we are here to remain, and now double your consumption for collective defense.
« The United States is active in NATO, as they have always been, » said rubbio to journalists, standing next to the Secretary General of NATO Mark Route at the beginning of a two-day meeting. « President Tramp clearly put it to know that it supports NATO. We will stay in NATO. »
However, it is not clear how the tramp supports NATO is experienced in Europe, after he entered duty in November. He repeatedly, that he could refuse to interfere with allies who did not meet NATO’s goals if they were attacked, undermining such a mutual defense, which is the essential principle of the Alliance.
The American president also stunned Europeans, a semi-final territory, which was part of Denmark, as well as the opening of the war in Ukraine, largely neglecting other members, such as Washington, Kiev had hundreds of billions of dollars.
But Rubio, who I Sam in 2016 himself for the US president, suggested that there was a misunderstanding: « Some of that hysteria and hyperbole about NATO I see in global, and some domestic media are unjustified. »
Despite tensions, rubio and routes expire NATO unity
Mark routes, which took office last year, also stressed the importance of transatlantic connection. « We know that the United States is a solid ally in NATO, » he said. « But that commitment comes with expectation, and the expectation is that European Allies and Canada must spend more. »
Routes, former Dutch Prime Minister said that Canada and European Allies since 2017 increased their own consumption on defense for 700 billion euros. Probably in an attempt to calm the United States, the routes emphasized that all allies from NATO should have a goal to spend « more than three percent. »
Today, a very militarized Russia leads a war on NATO’s threshold, but also all unpredictable US-tramp administration behavior, encouraged Europe in recent months to invest more in defense.
« The Russian threat will exist for many more years, » the routes said.
Long before the tramp, the United States called all NATO allies to meet the agreed goal: two percent of gross domestic product invest in defense. Most NATO countries now do this, the average consumption of members in 2024. was 2.7 percent.
Rubio reminded the new goal of the Administration Tramps on Thursday. « We want to get out of here with understanding that we are on the road, realistic way, that each of the members are committed to reaching up to five percent, » he said, adding that it also includes 3.5 percent.
Astonishing customs elevated a message of good will
Rubies’s task in Brussels, as much as Tramp, because the tramp previously announced the introduction of stunning customs, for which many are afraid that they could challenge the global trade war. The imposement of 10 percent is now applied to almost all goods imported into the United States. The goods from the European Union, which includes 23 of the 31 NATO countries, is subject to 20 percent.
Coming to talks, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Baro, admitted that Transatlantic Unity « on temptation due to decisions made and published by President Tramp ».
The leaving German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Analena Berbok said that the economic security was « part of the entire security ».
However, the ministers of several countries emphasized that they continue to see the United States as an ally.
In front of NATO big tasks and numerous questions
Generally speaking, European NATO allies are prepared for the withdrawal of the United States that turn to Asia; The tramp administration is seriously worried about China.
One of the scenarios who preoccupied Europe is so that they could withdraw some of the approximately 100,000 of their troops, which is increased by 20,000 under the former US President Joa Biden, after Russia launched full invasion of Ukraine 2022.
Asking about such possibility, the route said that this issue is not new and that « there are no plans to suddenly reduce their presence here in Europe. »
While expecting the NATO leaders in June in the Dutch city of The Hague, the main preoccupation today 75 years old alliance will certainly be war in Ukraine. Tramp continues to take negotiations between Moscow and Kiev who have so far not adopted a permanent peace agreement. In the long run, the United States wants Europe to take responsibility for the security of Ukraine.
Was Rubi’s message convincing?
Rafael Los from the Brain Trust, the European External Relations Council, believes that it is unlikely that Rubio managed to calm allies. « Europeans do not consider that it was especially soothing, especially after the customs statement, now that we are in the US trading war. »
And neither the prospects that any members of NATO spend five percent of their GDP on defense are unlikely, Los said. « It really needs a command economy, like Russian. In the cold war, some allies from NATO spent five percent and more on defense, but they were an exception. It was mostly more than three percent. »
Russia is expected to spend more than six percent of its GDP on defense.
In the next few months, Europeans will try to see what exactly they should spend. « Europeans know that, before NATO Summits, they should do more in many different ways, » Los points out. « It’s about their capabilities and what a shopping list means for consumption. »
