Customers are going to make a clear difference
From June 20, something new happens at Elgiganten – and that will be the customers.

From June 20, 2025, new EU rules will come into force to make it easier for consumers to choose sustainable electronics.
Smartphones and tablets will henceforth be equipped with energy labels – just as we already know it from home appliances.
But energy consumption is only one part of the new brand. It must also show how durable the unit is, how easy it is to repair and how long the manufacturer promises software updates.

The goal of the new labeling is to give consumers a clear and comparable basis when choosing new electronics. At the same time, producers are forced into greater transparency and better quality.
It illuminates the Elgigant in one press release.
According to the EU, all smartphones and tablets must be able to handle at least 800 charges and still have 80 % of battery capacity in retention. Spare parts must be available for seven years after the product has been taken out of sale. And software updates must be available for at least five years.
Elgiganten welcomes the labeling
“We are looking forward to this labeling scheme becoming a reality- and we know that many of our customers also have. It can be difficult to find around what is a bargain when you need a new mobile or tablet, and here the label becomes a great help. Durability scores that we expect to be more important than energy efficiency, ”says Allan Olderkjær, sales manager for Telecom in Elgiganten and continues:
« We believe the labeling is quickly becoming an important basis for comparison for quality and durability, and we already see that manufacturers are making more repairable products. We see this as a clear sign that the EU initiatives are working. In the Elgiganten Group, we are already repairing over 500,000 products a year-and we are ready to take even more in. So we are looking forward to helping even more customers extend electronics. »
Requirements for the new energy labeling – in short
-
Energy labeling: All smartphones and tablets will have an energy label that shows energy efficiency, durability, battery life, repairability and IP classification.
-
Durability and repairability: The devices must be able to handle at least 800 charging cycles and preserve 80 % of the battery capacity. Manufacturers must also make spare parts available for seven years after the product has been taken out of sale.
-
Software support: Devices must receive software updates for at least five years after termination of sales.
-
Environmental impact: The EU estimates that the new rules can save nearly 14 Terawatt-Timer power annually by 2030, which is equivalent to one-third of the current power consumption for these units. In the longer term, however, the greatest effect will be extended life of the products through more durable and repairable solutions.
