Cultural dialogue between Lublin and Kaunas cities

Lublin and Kaunas are cities with a European heritage brand for a significant contribution to European cultural identity. It was this commonality that inspired the Re: Union project, which emphasizes historical, social and cultural connections between Lithuania and Poland.
44 Kaunas buildings won the European Heritage Label for the unique architecture of interwar modernism, created in 1919-1940, when the city was the temporary capital of Lithuania. In the short term, the city turned into a focal point of culture, science and creation. Modern buildings here are symbols of national strengths, progress and peculiar identity.
The Polish city won the honorable title for 1569. signed by the Lublin Union, which united the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania into a common state. Not only is it a political solution, it is also a huge step forward to multicultural, cooperation -based Europe.
By the end of the year, various cities will host various events that promote the European Heritage Labor, focusing on the knowledge of cultural heritage, the promotion of tourism and youth activities. Joint application – one of the 10 winners who received funding for the European Heritage Bureau – 30 thousand. euros. All cultural and educational activities are organized by Kaunas and Lublin municipalities.
Event Start – Kaunas
“At first glance, Kaunas and Lublin are like two different worlds: one is the capital of interwar modernism, where architecture testifies to the strengthening and rebirth of national identity, the other is the cradle of the historic Lublin Union, where the Lublin Union was born, one of the most significant European political unions.
Despite the complex historical peripetes and different roads, these cities today are connected by a common approach – the aim to protect and relevant heritage by turning it into a live cultural dialogue between generations and nations, ”said Kaunas Vice Mayor Mantas Jurgutis.
The first events will start in Kaunas – May 23. 11 am at Kaunas Municipality (Laisvės Alley 96). Here, the city leaders, together with the Polish delegation, made up of Lublin city institutions and tourism representatives, will officially open the exhibition « Re: Union: Connections between Lublin and Kaunas ».

Throughout the month, Kaunas residents and guests of the city will be able to get acquainted with the stories prepared by the partners about the Lublin Union, the circumstance of its signing and the most important personalities, and to know historical buildings of Lublin through the photos. Also learn more about part of Kaunas buildings named from the European heritage. In mid -June, the exhibition on the nuggets of Kaunas heritage will be exhibited in Lublin Lithuanian Square.
On the occasion of Kaunas’s 617th birthday, sound wishes come from Poland-Saturday, May 24, from 5 pm. An alternative rock band from Lublin, Mohypisian, will appear on the Santaka Park Youth Stage. Musicians combine the sound of the 1960s classical rock with modern indie in style and elements of psychedelics. The band’s energetic performances and peculiar sounds earned them the sympathy of both critics and alternative musicians.
More activities in June
In mid -June, ten free tours of Kaunas will start in Kaunas in Kaunas. It is planned that about 200 pupils will be able to participate. It will be a unique opportunity to take a walk around the city with a guide, get to know heritage live, and in some cases, to newly discover known buildings.

Those wishing to investigate the nuggets of the city European heritage and other UNESCO World Heritage brand will be able to help the renewed « Modernism Guide » in Lithuanian, English and Polish. On the map, the municipality and the Kaunas team noted the routes of the European Heritage Stark, added stories about buildings, their creators, architectural fun.
