In court, the trial of the grandparents of two -year -old Ethan Ives Griffiths, who died in August 2021, his mother Shannon, together with the children, lived with her parents in her family home this summer. On August 14, the services were called after a serious fall of a 2-year-old boy. The child was unconscious, he died after two days in the hospital.
The autopsy showed that Ethan weighed only 10 kg and was 92 cm tall. He had 40 different injuries on his body, including cuts, abrasions and bruises. The ribs pierced from under the skinny belly through thin skin. The boy’s brain was swollen, there was a blood clot in one of the lobes, he had numerous head and stomach injuries. According to the pathologist, it was the head injury that led to the boy’s death. According to the expert, injuries were not accidental.

Before his death, he experienced « suffering, pain and misfortune »
At the time of the accident, only grandparents were present at the boy-47-year-old Michael and 46-year-old Kerry. The incident occurred when the child stayed in the garden. His mother talked on the phone on the first floor at home. Ethan’s grandparents were accused of murder, causing or allowing the death of a child and abusing him. They do not plead guilty. They blame the boy’s mother, 28-year-old Shannon. According to investigators, however, a woman should answer « only » for causing or allowing her son’s death and abuse of him. She also pleads not guilty. The woman was not accused of murder, but according to investigators she was aware of the threat of grandparents for the child and « she did nothing to protect him from it. »
The trial of Ethan’s guardians revealed the scale of suffering that the boy experienced every day before his death. « He was quiet and withdrawn, small and painfully thin, » said prosecutor Caroline Rees. She added that he was the object of « abuse and neglect », and other children were encouraged to abuse him as part of « fun ». Before his death, he experienced « suffering, pain and misfortune. »

In court it was argued that the boy’s grandmother delayed 20 minutes after his fall before she called the emergency number. The unconscious boy was taken to hospital, but died after two days, August 16, 2021.
Doctors found that Ethan had injuries indicating a shake child’s team, had a high sodium level, which indicated dehydration, a sunken chest.
Several recordings from the monitoring camera, mounted in the Ivensów garden, were also recreated before the court. You can see Ethana, who barely maintains a balance on the trampoline, while other children jump around him. The boy falls many times. On one of the recordings, his mother entered the trampoline and bounced, causing the collapse of a 2-year-old.
« He jumped like a rag doll, » the prosecutor said in court, indicating that none of the adults present in the garden had stopped other children from aggressive fun, for which Ethan was too small. On another recording, Ethan is raised by his legs, for another carried by his grandfather for one hand home.

« His behavior with this sick and weak child is cruel, » said Rees, adding that she would not treat the animal in this way.
« Neither Kerry Ives nor Shannon Ives showed even a little care or care, » said the prosecutor.
« Shannon Ives was aware that her parents were a significant risk of physical harm to Ethan, but she did not take any steps to protect her child, » she added.
