Cross-party initiative calls for a democracy stress test

Eight young politicians from CSV, DP, LSAP and Déi Gréng want to subject democracy in this country to a stress test, that is, simulate scenarios in which anti -democratic parties come to the government and try to weaken democratic institutions and rights. The aim is to identify weaknesses that could then be remedied or avoided. They suggest commissioning experts, for example from the University of Luxembourg, to carry out this analysis.

In addition, a participatory and cross -party process could be initiated with the help of Parliament and the government, with the aim of working out an action plan for a strong democracy with concrete measures. The areas should be defined in advance across party, although it is important to the initiators that this takes place beyond any party logic.

Participate in the process

Citizens should also be integrated into this process, this in the form of a consulting citizens' council, whose composition reflects the population and could bring in the new ideas, according to the press release sent on Thursday.

With this initiative, the young politicians want to strengthen democracy – this « in the context of the worldwide success of parties that attack democratic institutions and principles, as well as increasing disinformation campaigns and the instrumentalization of social media for political purposes ».

The eight politicians – Fabricio Costa and Jessie Thill by Déi Gréng, Danielle Filbig and Sammy Wagner from the LSAP, Jana Degrott and Michael Agostini from DP and Vincent Reding and Jill Goeres from CSV – in early January with Chamber President Claude Wiseler (CSV) and at the end of February with Premier Luc Frieden (CSV) entertained about their plans, which included the topic of media education in schools. They now hope for a participatory and cross -party process « which leads to concrete results ».
