Crete: Balcony fell on popular market benches in Heraklion

A serious incident was recorded at noon on Monday, May 5 in the Kaminia area in Heraklion Cretewhen a balcony section of apartment building was detached and fell on a popular market, causing disruption to the authorities and attendees.

The incident occurred shortly after 14:00, at a time when the retailers had begun the departure process, completing their activities, according to neakriti.gr. In particular, part of the terrace of an apartment building on Smyrilou Street, fell on a second floor balcony and part of it fell on the bench.

By luck there were no casualties

There were no injuries from the serious incident, but by chance, according to the information of the same medium, there were no casualties. It even shocking the fact that the young man on the bench where the balcony sections fell, a few seconds earlier, was removed from the spot to speak on his cellphone and literally escaped a miracle.

The fire and ELAS, engineers of the Municipality of Heraklion arrived at the spot, as well as the Deputy Mayor of Civil Protection Manolis Cheretis. The incident has raised concern to locals and beyond.
