The emergency services were called up last Sunday night after a crashed car was noticed in a canal near Zandvoorde. After a short search, the driver appeared.
Brandweer Westhoek was called around 1.40 am on Sunday night to free a person from a vehicle along the Zillebekestraat in the countryside near Zandvoorde, a part of Zonnebeke.
« A passer -by noticed that a vehicle whose lights were still burning was upside down in the canal. At that time we did not yet know whether there were one or more people in the car, » said fire officer Dirk Vandekerckhove on the spot.

The crashed BMW was situated on the territory of Zandvoorde, near the border with the Ypres district of Hollebeke. « We took a short search in the wreck, in the canal and on the lands in the area, but could not find anyone, » said Vandekerckhove.
« Not much later the young driver arrived and was transferred to the hospital for a medical check. The vehicle was badly damaged. Family of the driver arrived on site to hoist the wreck with the help of a crane and agricultural vehicle. » Fire brigade Westhoek provided signage and cleaned the road surface.
