Craction of 300-year-old oak is controversial
– Oak survived the war, had a historical, cultural and landscape value, determined the biodiversity of this place – says Mr. Bartek, a resident of Skrzeszew Żukowski, in an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza. – It was a monumental tree of huge size.

It turns out that The decision to cut was made by an official from the Commune Office in Żuków. According to him, the clipping was necessary because the oak was rising on a private plot, where the access road was planned to neighboring properties. The municipal authorities inform that before making a decision, an inspection was carried out during which no breeding stations were found within the registered trees.
– The cut tree was not a monument to nature and no application for giving it such a status was received by the Commune Office in Żuków – explains Piotr Lewna from the Commune Office in Żuków in an interview with « Wyborcza ».
However, residents and experts do not leave a dry thread on officials. Miłosława Borzyszkowska-Szewczyk, president of the Institute of Landscape Protection of Pomerania, does not hide its indignation. – This is a story about Polishness, which has little in common with reality. Buying a plot with three -year -old oak and applying for permission to remove it is an incomprehensible movement for me, also in economic terms – he says in an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza.
Residents talk about « concrete » and lack of imagination
Mr. Bartek, who publicized the case, claims that the decision of officials is an example of short -sightedness and lack of respect for nature. – Betonosis surrounds our world. We cut out trees that are part of our heritage, only to make room for asphalt and concrete – he says agitated.
Was there really no other solution? Officials ensure that they took into account all options, but the residents do not believe in these translations. They believe that the tree had a landscape and symbolic value.
Could the oak be saved?
The matter of cutting a 300-year-old oak in Skrzeszewo Żukowski is another example of a conflict between social interest and nature protection. Was it really impossible to find a solution that would allow this impressive exhibit to keep? Residents are sure: officials have failed throughout the line.
