Couples set their pregnancy as a project
In the third episode of Delo’s podcast In the outpatient clinic with dr. Eagle is prof. dr. Deadlock eagle hosted Professor Doctor Borut Kobalagynecologist, expert director of the Gynecological Clinic UKC Ljubljana. With « one of the greatest experts for women » as he called it, they spoke, among other things, the challenges of modern gynecology and obstetrics, menopause, cervical cancer, fertility and reproductive problems and technological progress in gynecology.
Prof. dr. Borut Kobal has been dealing with gynecology for forty years and the challenges of which this profession is facing today are completely different than years ago, mainly because society has changed radically during this time. While technology and lessons have progressed, the problem is the lack of gynecologists (or what doctors in general), and those who work are overloaded.
The problem is that women are increasingly looking for information online and trying to self -discontinue self -discovery – doctors must therefore be equipped with even more knowledge that they are not aware of it. He also mentioned functional disorders and oncological challenges. “Unfortunately, the aging of the population also brings more cancer. Although most of the cancer today is cured, of course, in addition to trying to cure or at least hold the disease, the most important quality of life is, « he stressed.

Problems with pregnancy and childbirth at home
In the first part of the conversation, they touched on reproductive health. The number of births in Slovenia is declining, since 1970 there are as many as 10,000 less per year. This is due to several factors, first of which later decisions for the first child (the average age of women is 31.5 years and is still increasing), when, according to Borut Kobal, some chronic conditions occur, which can also lead to reduced fertility, and more and more pathologies, as well as excessive weight or obesity. Gynecologists cannot influence the age at which women opt for their first child, but can advise them on nutrition and weight.
Unfortunately, we are still experiencing that women from childbirth come at home, in poor condition and the like.
For couples that have problems with pregnancy, artificial insemination is an increasingly common solution. According to Borut Kobal, about ten percent of children are born in Slovenia with artificial insemination. Their health is quite comparable to children, born naturally, « but of course a different psychological background. » Today, couples set their pregnancy as a project, and if it is not possible naturally, they opt for biomedical assistance. The special population within these are those in which women cope with endometriosis – a disease of which is actually unknown.
The trend, in different countries differently represented, is also a home childbirth, to which the profession is skeptical. The key factors in this are the organization and state of mind – the decision must be the result of a compelling reflection – and generally this kind of delivery, if it is already more suitable for women who do not give birth for the first time. “Unfortunately, we are still experiencing that women from childbirth come at home, in poor condition and the like. I think that the problem is not only in the one who leads home childbirth, but probably organizational, « Borut Kobal said, saying the experience of his daughter, who gave birth to another child at home.
Vaccine safe, vaccination low
Key changes in the field of women’s health have occurred in Slovenia in recent years in the field of so -called gynecological cancers. With the Zora screening program, which, in addition to Dora (breast cancer screening) and dawn (colon and rectal cancer) allows for early detection of cancer, the incidence of cervical cancer from 16 to 100,000 reduced to seven per 100,000.
Another important change or success is the occurrence of HPV vaccine (human papillomavirus), which is considered the main pathogen of this disease, but the vaccination is much lower than you would like: only fifty to sixty percent. The vaccine is extremely safe and, virtually it does not cause side effects, but provides protection for about ten years. Cancer developing from HPV is considered one of the most common and affects young people in women.
Every woman experiences menopause in the later period of her life, which is associated with a whole range of not only hormonal but also physical and psychological changes. Some may have problems for the rest of their lives, but there is a solution, that is, hormonal treatment. « Men, you are also an important medicine in menopause, » added prof. dr. Borut Kobal.
