Countless drivers have received parking fines for the same reason: deeply unfair!
More P guards, fewer parking spaces
Over the past year, the medieval town of inner city has lost over 500 public parking spaces. Another 75 stands to be removed by 2026 as part of the municipality’s plan to provide more space for pedestrians and cyclists.
The municipality has started information campaigns, but many motorists – especially those who do not live in the city – feel poorly informed. It creates chaos in the street scene, where signs, zones and parking rules often contradict what drivers expect.
Criticism to the Ombudsman
The association ‘Yes Thanks to Copenhagen’, which counts over 400 members, has now submitted an official complaint to the Parliamentary Ombudsman. They believe that the City of Copenhagen’s information level and signage is so inadequate that motorists risk unjust fines – even by good faith.
Store owner Karsten Bach fears that the development not only creates the hassle of motorists – but threatens the survival of business.
« We do not believe that this is fair that the City of Copenhagen has removed so many parking spaces overnight, » he says, pointing out that many of his customers come from afar and need a car – and space to put it.
While the town hall is maintaining its green ambitions, the traders and their customers in the meantime have to find themselves paying the price – sometimes literally.
