Costa: The future of Serbia is in the EU, the ball is in your field
« Dear Alexander, the process of joining is based on building confidence. I know that many have lost confidence in this process, but I have come to assure you personally that the future of Serbia is in the EU. The ball is in your field. Please do not waste time because the future will not wait, » said Costa. |
He added that the necessary reforms for opening Cluster 3 for Serbia are in the field of freedom of the media, prevention of corruption and strengthening of electoral laws.
The head of the European Council comes to discuss Ukraine and more EU priorities
« The process of joining the EU is a process of building confidence. We have a positive expansion impulse, which is a signal for Serbia to take advantage. We remain heavily engaged in Serbia’s accession to the European Union as a stable and prosperous country, » Kosha said.
Serbia has been an EU membership candidate since 2012.
Serbian President Alexander Vucic said he had spoke openly with Costa about his visit to Moscow last week and stressed that he was aware of what the EU was thinking about it, but it was Serbia’s political will to be on the European road.
« It is Serbia’s political will to accelerate its integration, to do its job, to open as soon as possible cluster 3 ( » Competitiveness and inclusive growth » – ed.), Whether before June or October – I don’t think anyone can know this, » Vuchch noted. |
« The atmosphere at the moment, probably because of my trip to Moscow, is not particularly good, but we are looking to fulfill everything we have promised, and I believe that then there will be an understanding and progress based on merit. »
The visit of the Serbian president to Moscow has sparked many criticism from Brussels. Serbia is an EU membership candidate, but has not joined the Western sanctions against Russia, introduced for the invasion of Ukraine, although it condemned Moscow’s aggression. Vucic states that the imposition of sanctions does not meet the national interests of Serbia.
Costa begins today a tour of the Western Balkans, with his first stop being Serbia, where, in addition to Vucic, Prime Minister Juro Matsut and members of parliament are also expected to meet.
