Controversy. « A new false, related to the Holocaust »
More than 30 researchers, intellectuals and artists who declare themselves concerned about the issue of historical truth on the Holocaust have addressed an open letter to the deputy Silviu Vexler, the representative of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania, who accused him that he has falsely argued that the high prelate Iuliu Hossu saved thousands of Jews.
« We are a group of researchers in the history of Holocaust and intellectuals involved in studying the problem of the two totalitarianism. Some of us have spent years in archive research related to the various aspects of this complex subject. Also, some of us were members of the International Commission for Holocaust study » Elie Wiesel « . We were all surprised, in the first days of June, when I learned about the event you participated in and especially about the presentation you made to Cardinal Iuliu Hossu. According to the press materials, during the homage event it was said that Iuliu Hossu saved thousands of Jews, and you confirmed that he hid in the Greek Catholic Cathedral in Cluj those Jews to be deported and would have asked the believers to « protect the Jews to be sent to Auschwitz ». Unfortunately, none of this information is confirmed by documentary evidence, convergent and placed beyond different subjective auspices. We believe that the beautiful documents in history must also be based on credible and verifiable sources. In fact, the personality, the civic sacrifice or the historical image of Iuliu Hossu do not need such versatile additions. Moreover, as far as we know, the Cardinal did not round up these rescue actions ”, the letter shows.
The signatories of this open letter, as well as colleagues researchers with whom they consulted, said: “I did not find, during long research, coherent and solid evidence, to prove saving actions of the high prelate. The relevant archives of the theme were investigated: Yad Vashem Archive, Archive of the Holocaust Museum from Washington (US) CNSAS and Hungarian archives.
« The augmentation of history with details, however, devoid of consolidated documentary evidence, exceeds a red line. In this case, in such an important subject, any statement should always be based on relevant, multiple and convergent evidence. Such procedures throw in derisory the gravity of the truth about the Holocaust, So, the fact itself is the real acts of some rights between the peoples.
At the beginning of June, at the Vatican, the ceremony was held in which the memory of Cardinal Iuliu Hossu was honored, for his contribution to the rescue of the Jews from Northern Transylvania, during the Holocaust. The ceremony was honored by Pope Leon XIV and based on the testimony of the leadership of the Jewish community, present in Rome.
Professor Liviu Rotman emphasized: « The news was taken over by numerous agencies, has aroused emotions. Naturally! One aspect is less clear: what are the testimonies that prove the celebrated gesture. They were not invoked. To say that thousands of Jews from the high prelate should be tested. Silviu Wexler did not feel the need to mention these testimonies. False, exposed, in front of the whole world, in one of the most visible places on the planet.
