The city and the Antwerp district have chosen a design team to work out the reconstruction of the Meir and the surrounding area (Leysstraat, Jesusstraat and Twakaandenstraat). Sweco, Bau & Light designer Atelier Jeol now have to get started to work out a first preliminary design.
City and District followed the advice drawn up by a professional jury about the five concepts submitted for the most famous Antwerp shopping street. Together with the selected design team, all parties involved will now continue to work and develop a first preliminary design. That is expected in mid -2026.
The chosen design team presented a concept and vision in which the atmosphere of the Grote Markt and the Central Station is extended by the use of adapted lighting. A coherence is created between the Meir, the Twelve -Monstring and Jesusstraat. In the Jesusstraat, the focus will be on greening and living space, taking into account the dynamics of student life, shopping and culture.

Sturdy makeover
Also at the center of the vision are the many needs of the busy shopping boulevard and the comfort of the Antwerp citizen and the many visitors. « The most famous, largest and busiest shopping street in Antwerp gets a sturdy makeover where we transform our beloved boulevard sustainable into a contemporary and pleasant, greening place to shop, enjoy a terrace or the surrounding valuable heritage, » said Schepen Ken Casier (N-VA).
