Congolese government and rebel group M23 announces the fires during conversations on permanent ceasefire

The government of Congo and Rebelgroep M23 announced on Wednesday evening in a joint statement to stop their fights in the east of the country and to work on A permanent ceasefirereport the French newspaper Le Monde and press agency AFP. The surprising announcement follows conversations in Doha, where Qatar acts as a mediator.

The statement was read on national television by a spokesperson for M23. He said the ceasefire will apply during the conversations and « up to its completion. »

More than six cease -up positions have been closed since 2021, but they were always violated.

The peace negotiations between the Congolese government and M23 started this month, but so far nothing had been officially brought out about that.

The raw material-rich Eastern Congo has been the scene of devastating conflicts for more than thirty years. In recent months, the situation in the area on the border with Rwanda escalated when M23 rebels launched a great offensive with the support of Rwanda. In addition, they conquered the cities of Goma and Bukavu.
