The announcement was made by a decree read Friday evening March 28 on national television. Moussa Dadis Camara, the sixties, came out of prison and is in the capital Conakry, said this Saturday the Guinean Human Rights Defense Organization (OGDH).
At the end of a historical trial Who had lasted almost two years, Moussa Dadis Camara, former president and former chief of a junta, was sentenced in July 2024 for his responsibility in the massacre of September 28, 2009 in Guinea committed under his presidency. Moussa Dadis Camara had pleaded not guilty until the last day at his trial.
He was however president this September 28, 2009 and the following days when the red berets of his guard, soldiers, police and militiamen murdered in a stadium in Conakry and around dozens of people Gathered to dissuade him from presenting himself to the presidential election scheduled for January 2010. Dozens of women were raped there.
Captain Camara and a group of officers had taken power on December 23, 2008 after the death of President Lansana Conté. The next day, he proclaimed himself president. No civilian could manage this country plagued by corruption and managed since independence by autocrats, he will then justify.
Captain Camara was then a stranger, a Guerzé, ethnicity of Guinea Forestière, very far from Conakry. His father, illiterate according to him, was a peasant. « I am a man of the people (…) I was born in a box »he insists once at the top. After university studies, he entered this primordial institution in 1990 that is the army, where he had a career in stewardship.
It was his commitment in 2007 and 2008 in mutinies for questions of sales which earned him the rallying of a certain number of comrades, say the latter. « I am the father of the nation, that’s what fate too wanted », he launched in 2009. At first, his speech for the people earned him the support of many Guineans. Invariably surrounded by his camouflage outfit, red beret on his head, he stages his authority in front of crowds and cameras. Vociferating or joking, intense, he treats a Russian thief businessman before everyone, lesson for foreign diplomats. It is the « Dadis Show », exalted and confused.
Quickly, the multiplication of arrests and the vagueness maintained by Captain Camara on his intentions for the presidential election sow the division. His mental health is questioned.
On September 28, 2009, Moussa Dadis Camara said he was « Overwhelmed » by men out of control. On December 3, his camp help pulled him in his head because he would have tried to weigh all the charges on him. He was evacuated to Morocco and then Burkina Faso where, in January 2010, on West African mediation, he renounced to govern. In exile, forced to political abstinence, he converted to Christianity. He announced his candidacy for the presidential election in 2015 but was caught in the same year by September 28, charged and prevented from presenting himself.
He returned in September 2022 for the trial. In December 2022, ten weeks after opening the trial, he was called upon to deposit. In a dark boubou, his eternal gourmet on the wrist, he denies all responsibility, shouts in plot and refuses to ask for forgiveness. He summons the Héraclite and Emmanuel Kant philosophers, the Egyptian and Napoleon Pharaohs and the memory of his father. « Many may think: » Ah! Dadis Camara is crazy ». Dadis Camara is not crazy, Dadis Camara is generous because Dadis Camara recognizes her ancestors ”, he will then launch.
