According to centuries -old tradition, the Church is then prepared for the conclave – a unique event that takes place behind the closed door of the Sistine Chapel.
After the death of Pope Francis, the attention of the world focuses on the preparations for the choice of his successor. Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, temporarily performing the most important duties in the church, faces the task of organizing the conclave. In the media and among the clergy there is already speculation about possible candidates for the new pope.

How long does the conclave last?

It makes the most important decisions and is preparing for the conclave. The duration of voting depends on the degree of agreement between cardinals – in the past it happened that the decision could not be made for many weeks or even months.
During the voting conclave, they take place twice a day. After each of them, voting cards are burned, and the smoke floating above the Sistine Chapel informs the faithful about the result. If a new pope was not chosen, black smoke appears. White smoke means that the choice has been made and the church has a new leader.

Where does the conclave take place?
After the death or resignation of the Pope, cardinals from around the world come to the Vatican. After the funeral ceremonies and the designated waiting time, the conclave begins – the closed election of the new pope, taking place in the Sistine Chapel. Cardinals who have the right to vote vote for their chosen candidate. The whole process is shrouded in mystery and runs according to the strictly observed rules.
