Competitive readings of Tammsaare's works will be held in the Narv College


On March 14, at the Narv College of Tartu University, a republican competition of artistic reading of works by Anton Hansen Tamsaare “From Hansen to Tammsaare” will be held. The purpose of the competition is to motivate young people and adults to improve the knowledge of the Estonian language, develop confidence in public speeches and popularize classical literature.

The competition offers participants the opportunity to look at the work of Tammsaar from the new side, to comprehend its relevance in the modern world, get acquainted with Estonian culture, as well as improve the skills of public performances. This year it takes place within the framework of the year of the book, which emphasizes the importance of reading and culture of the word.

“Tamsaare's works are not just a literary classic, they reflect the questions and answers of each generation. Competitive reading allows participants to be more deeply understanding its texts and feel the wealth of the Estonian language, ”says the younger teacher of the Estonian language of the Narva College and the organizer of the Tend of Pipe Competition.

Few people know that Anton Hansen Tamsaare received a gymnasium education in Narva and spent the summer months with his family in Narva-Yesuu. His creative formation was closely connected with this region. In his works, the social and philosophical thoughts of the era are reflected, which makes them relevant today.

Students of grades 4–12, students of professional educational institutions, universities, as well as adults, regardless of their native language, participate in the competition. This year, among the participants, representatives of Ida-Virumaa, Kharyumaa and Yigevamaa. Each participant performs by heart an excerpt or a short story from the works of Anton Hansen Tamsaara lasting 3-5 minutes.

The performances are evaluated by the jury, which includes recognized figures of theater and public life. Particular attention is paid to literacy of speech, transmitting the meaning of the text, the technique of execution and emotional expression.
