CNA asks to delete crime images from Ilfov

The National Audiovisual Council firmly condemns the distribution ‘uncontrolled, irresponsible and deeply harmful’, on the big digital platforms, of a filming in which a young woman is brutally killed, in the street, in front of her own minor daughter.

‘The public presentation of such acts of extreme violence not only seriously disturbs public order and deeply emotionally affects the public opinion, but also contributes to the generation of a dangerous discourse, in which the deed is relativized or even justified. The uncontrolled spread of these images in the digital space contravenes international standards on the protection of human dignity, seriously affects minors and contributes to the trivialization of violence in society. In such a context, the protection of the public, especially of the minors, is no longer just a legal obligation, but becomes an urgent and unequivocal moral debt, « according to a press release of the CNA.

The CNA mentions that it has transmitted official requests to all relevant digital platforms – including X (former Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok and YouTube – to eliminate the audiovisual materials containing the crime images.

‘These records seriously violate the internal policies of platforms on violent and extremely bloody content and, at the same time, contravene the audiovisual legislation in Romania, which prohibits the dissemination of such contents that can affect the psychological and emotional development of minors and can cause trauma among the general public. The CNA decision is based on the provisions of the Audiovisual Law no. 504/2002, which gives the authority the quality of guarantor of the public interest in the field of audiovisual communication and requires imperative compliance with the legal and digital ethics norms by all the actors involved in the online content distribution. At the same time, the Council addresses a warning to the Romanian broadcasters who, in the chase after the audience, choose to repeatedly broadcast images of extremely violent character, completely ignoring the human dignity and suffering of the victim, « says the statement.

The CNA points out that such practices are deeply irresponsible, flagrantly violates the law, contravene ethical principles and risk encouraging a media culture dominated by violence, cynicism and lack of empathy.

‘The Council asks all the television stations to comply with audiovisual legislation, to avoid any form of human pain exploitation for sensationalist purposes and to guarantee the protection of the right to image and dignity of suffering, especially the members of the victim. The CNA will not tolerate any deviation from the law under the pretext of informing the public or the market competition. Protecting human dignity is not optional. It is an obligation. And in the face of such tragedies, it is also a measure of essential decency. We will strictly follow the respect of the law. The CNA will not tolerate any deviation. No crime should become a show, ‘stresses the CNA.
