Clear victory for Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 – Diepresse.com

The ESC 2025 is beaten. Austria’s candidate JJ has delivered a perfect performance – and is rewarded with the victory in Basel. Israel won second place.

The sensation is perfect: Austria won the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel. JJ, bourgeois Johannes Pietsch, delivered perfect performance in the final and increased again compared to the semi -finals. The Countertenor’s song « Wasted Love » is a lot of opera and a little techno, it surprises and impresses. In two places, the voice climbs to the high CIS that was live. A boat had been brought to the stage for the show, with a wind machine and stage rain a storm was generated that only escaped at the end. A special feature also: The three minutes of the song were transmitted black and white, so that you picked up visually.

In advance, it looked like a duel Sweden against Austria, which the 24-year-old JJ clearly won. Sweden relied on a rehearsed choreography and a changeable stage, where a sauna became a sauna from the campsite and campfire. The trio Kaj, which actually belongs to the Swedish -speaking minority of Finland, relied on humor and escapism: in « Bara Bada Bastu » the sauna sang is sung in Swedish, garnished with a few words Finnish. At her performance, every hand movement, every smile. For the singing pop number with folkloric elements, you had invented your own dance, which is easy to imitate.

The juries rated Austria best

A song made for the general public. But the song contest not only coordinates viewers, but half of the points come from specialist juries from the participating countries. That they would evaluate a trained opera singer with a technically complex contribution than the humorous contribution from Sweden was obvious. Austria clearly won the juries. But “Wasted Love” was also well received by the audience. In the end, Sweden only came fourth.

Second place for Israel

Surprisingly good cut off Israel. Yuval Raphael, a survivor of the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023, scored “New Day Will Rise” especially with the audience and took second place. Her song was perfectly sung and had a positive message: grief will also pass. « Don’t Cry Alone, » she sang while standing alone on the stage and hearing shouts. The Israeli broadcasting institution could have provided more support.

Italy came to fifth place. Lucio Corsi’s « Volevo Essere UN Duro » is really beautiful song with a clear Italian Cantautore voice, which looked better live than in the recording. The song was transferred subtitled so that the message was better understood: in the past he believed that he had to be a strong man, sang Corsi with white -made face and black -bordered eyes.

JJ was not the only Austrian on the ESC stage in Basel: The duo ABOR & TYNNA competed for Germany. Her mix of pop, electronics and a little hip-hop was one of the most contemporary contributions, and a challenge for Tynna, which has long been ill. In the final, this mastered better than in the semi -finals. In the end there was 15th place for Germany. Worse than hoped for, better than feared.

Third victory for Austria

Thanks to JJ, Austria can now look back on three victories at the Eurovision Song Contest. Previously, Conchita Wurst (« Rise Like a Phoenix » 2014) and Udo Jürgens (« Merci Cherie » 1966) had already brought the Eurovision Song Contest to Austria.
