In 2020, at the peak of Pandemia Kovid, Brooch felt like millions of other people around the world.

« I was bored at work and I wanted to try something different. »

Working at that time for French Gaming Giganta Ubisoft, he received an idea for his own project – a game of role inspired by one of his childhood, the classic Japanese series Final Fantasy.

It will eventually become Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which, five years later, became a sensation.

It was sold in a million copies in just three days, reached the top of viral lists at a spotifaise with music from the game, and even praised French President Emanuel Macron.

But one of the most exuberant things about her is a legend about how it was created – a story about random messages on redit, « huge happiness » and unusual approach to making play.

Expedition 33 is placed in the lumer, a fictitious world in the shadow of a huge monolith that has a sparkle number on one page.

Each year, the entity by the painter appears and reduce that number for one, causing the disappearance of all people in those years, and the game follows a group in the mission to destroy the mysterious creature.

It is an intriguing setting for one epic story, but aesthetics of the game, inspired by French from the 19th century, and its battams based on the strategy also separate from other games.

But it ruled the general opinion when he started players that players do not want something like that.

And therefore, five years later, he began recruiting people for his design made of love, sending messages to potential counterparts through the redit and online forum.

One of those answering was Jennifer Svedberg-Jen, who was in quarantine in Australia at the time.

« I saw Gijom’s publication on a redit in which she was looking for voice actors to record something free for demo, » she says.

« I told myself, ‘I’ve never done anything like that sounds cool, and that’s why I sent him an audition. »

Jennifer was engaged at first to play an important character in an early version of the game, but eventually replaced the roles to become the leading team writer.

Licisoft eventually left Ubisoft and formed a SendFol interactive to work full time at Clair Obscur from his seat in Montpellia, in France.

After providing financial resources from the publisher of Kepler interactive, the main team increased to thirty people.

Many of them were found in a similar, unusual way, just like Jennifer.

Jennifer Swedberg-Jen and Gyia Brooch say they « took on a variety of roles » during the game making

The composer Lyrien Testard – who has never worked on the video game before – was detected via the publication on the SAUDKLAUD music sharing website.

« That’s what I call Gijom’s effect. It’s very good at finding very cool people, » said Jennifer.

Gijia more modestly attributes its success to the cove – people who requested some creative valve – and also « huge happiness ».

« She was always the same story, » he said.

« I have a list of 15 people for contact and tell yourself: ‘All right, we may not get anyone’.

« And every time the first of them says, ‘All right, come on, let’s do that.’

But Gi is admitting that he was chasing people who acted as if they were « perfect in line with the direction » in which he wanted to go with the project.

« Lorient and I, when we first talked about the game, we had exactly the same references, » he said.

« We loved the same things. We watched the same things. The debate was very fluid. »

Expedition 33 is also widely praised due to production values - which could be measured with those games where hundreds of, as many as thousands of people were working.

He attributes a part of this by recent progress tools he used to make games, which has enabled the team to work more efficiently.

Kepler support has enabled the study to hire actors such as Charlie Coke from Derdevila, Andy Serkis from the lord of the rings, and actors for video games such as Jennifer Inglish and Ben Star.

And while Sendfol relied on additional studies of studies who supported them, musicians and other specialists, Jennifer and Gije say that the original team at the end « took more roles at the end of the same time. »

« We all gather all and do various tasks, who may be outside our traditional roles, » says Jennifer, who was also in charge of translating the game in different languages.

« I think we have a fantastic team composed of mostly younger people, but they are incredibly invested in this project and are very talented, » says Giji.

« Somehow everything worked, which still doesn’t make any sense after all these years. »
