Civil Defense responds to military situation
It is extremely unlikely that a military situation can be created in Iceland, but the civil protection system will take the nation if possible.
This was stated in a plea Runolfur Þórhallsson, Chief of Police of the Civil Protection Division of the National Commissioner of Policeat the National Commissioner of Police on security in Iceland today.
Need to deepen the debate
The conference mentioned several times the Scandinavian concept of « Total President » on which the basic idea of civil protection is based.
It refers to the fact that obligations are All aspects of society, such as government, police, municipalities, organizations, companies and individuals. According to Runolf, the slogan « We are all civil defense » is never too often used, as in the pandemic.
Runólfur mentioned that Finns have come the longest in their civil protection response due to their borders with Russia.
He said that in Iceland, a debate on legislative changes and that cooperation and analysis of data would be one of the most important.
However, in terms of the main threat and challenges of civil protection, Runólfur Natural History was numbers 1, 2 and 3. However, we also had to focus our attention on online attacks, vandalism, terrorism and military threats.
Not about inventory accumulation
Runólfur mentioned that a brochure is being prepared for the countrymen with information on emergency supplies and other such preparations if Iceland is to be attacked.
He said it was a team in increasing the nation’s trauma capacity and the work was in close cooperation with the entire civil protection system.
Runólfur said that such a brochure had been distributed in the Nordic countries that raised the public’s reaction. The situation, however, is simply that a changed worldview is being addressed in security and defense.
Runólfur pointed out that in the 1960s, a similar brochure in Iceland had been worked on in the shadow of the Cuban dispute. However, the fall was from publishing it for fear of causing too much anxiety.
Runólfur said the government needs to be clear in its policy of educating the public.
He said it was important to emphasize sympathy, charity and to look in our local community. Do not focus on and too much to buy supplies of water and canning products, or so -called « bunker mentality ».
« It’s about so much more than that, » Runólfur said, ending the last talk of the conference.
The second part of the conference’s agenda was closed to the police and the prosecution.
