Citizens cannot trust them
Arla talks warmly about climate efforts, but behind the scenes the math looks different.
It means at least Greenpeacewho has now embarked on an official complaint against the dairy giant.
The organization accuses Arla of exaggerating its CO₂ savings by tipping with measurement methods-without telling anyone.
According to Greenpeace, Arla has for years changed how they measure their climate footprint. The problem is that they are constantly comparing the new figures with an old basis of 2015 that has not been adjusted accordingly. The result? A climate basket that looks far nicer than it really should.
A single change of method between 2015 and 2016 accounts for almost half of the reduction that Arla highlights in its latest annual reports.
Several experts, including Ole Høy Jakobsen from Nordic Sustainability, have previously stated that « simply must not be counted as they do ».
It has now led Greenpeace to send a complaint directly to the Danish Business Authority. Here, they argue that Arla violates several paragraphs of the Danish Financial Statements Act – including requirements for credibility, clear method of method and comparability over time. The organization requires Arla to be forced to recalculate and publish more true climate data.
