Last year, 4.8 billion cinemas were sold around the world, which is 500 million less than 2023. The number of tickets sold in cinemas around the world declined by 8.8 percent in 2024 compared to 2023, the first drop in Kovid-19, the European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO) said at a conference within the Cannes Film Market.
« In 2024 a total of 4.8 billion cinema were sold around the world, which generated estimated revenue of 28 billion euros, » said Martin Kanzle of EAO.
According to him, these are 500 million tickets less than 2023.
Since 2020, which was catastrophic for cinemas due to health measures and restrictions, cinema attendance around the world was constantly growing.
Currently, cinema attends are 68 percent of 2019, the last year before the pandemic, while in 2023 it was over 70 percent. Europe holds better than other parts of the world. Cinema attendance in Europe reaches 75 percent of their level in 2019, and the decline in the number of tickets sold in 2024 is only 1.7 percent.
In contrast, in China – the world’s largest 21 percent market market – the decline in attendance was as much as 22 percent.
– In Europe, France and Ireland are highlighted with a high average spectators.
When it comes to production, most of the films, more precisely 81 percent, come from three countries – the United States, China and India – says Manuel Fioroni, an EAO analyst.
Unlike Chinese and Indian films, which are almost exclusively sold in the domestic market, American films are easily exported thanks to a wide distribution network and international audience. Of the 20 most successful films of the European Cinema, 18 are American.
