The event is ecumenical and traditionally runs from 10am to 24pm. Various Latvian Christian denominations churches participate together. Church Night is a meeting with the beauty of the church’s culture, art and spiritual value in the heritage. The idea of the Church Night to Latvia came from Austria, where more than 20 years ago, the first such Christian Church denominations and churches were jointly organized by an ecumenical event. Shortly thereafter, the event also took place in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Since 2012, the Church Night has also been held in Tartu, Estonia. The plans of the event are supported by the leaders of Latvia’s largest Christian denominations.
Open Church Day in Latvia has been complemented by the event since 2021 and invites visitors to travel to churches during the day, thus expanding the event, encouraging more to get to know Latvia’s sacred heritage.
