I

Lion XIV. He did something on the balcony of the basilica that none of his predecessors.

He will go in the footsteps of his predecessor, but it will not be Francis II. This is what he thinks of the newly elected Pope Lev XIV. Church analyst Imrich Gazdawho has been following the events in the Vatican for years and wrote about the last conclave.

The relatively quick choice of the new head of the Catholic Church surprised him. « There were historically the most cardinals in the Conclave, the countries around the world have never been as varied in the Cardinal Corps as it is now, » says the editor of the newspaper Stost, where he focuses on religious topics.

We also talked about why Francis would be happy with his successor, why the Cardinals agreed so quickly on behalf of the new Pope and whether the election of Cardinal was the election Roberta Prevosta Until I surprise. Imrich Gazda also says what was intrigued by the first public performance of Pope Leo XIV and what he has as a Pope.

Before the Conclave, the names of several cardinals were inflected as possible successors of Pope Francis, Robert was not among them. Have you been surprised by this name, have you registered it before?

His name was not so often covered, but the Vaticanists ranked him in a wider range of favorites.

I personally registered the name because he was a high -ranking member of the Roman Curia, but in particular he is a member of the Augustinian Order, who also work in Slovakia, with several of them I have personally known and friends and they mentioned it several times.

I also knew that it has in the near future, next month, to come to Slovakia, as the Augustinian Order celebrates the 30th anniversary of the present in Slovakia.

The newly elected Pope spoke to people on the balcony of the Basilica of Sts. Petra. What attracted you in his first public performance?

I was intrigued by both formal elements and the content of the expression. It was expected whether to get off the balcony of the Basilica of Sts. Peter only in the White Papal Reverend, a very simple way we saw it with Francis, or whether he will choose a more festive way and more festive papal clothing such as Benedict XVI. In this, the new Pope more liked Benedict XVI.

At the same time, I was intrigued that while his three predecessors, John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis, said his first speech completely spontaneously, he had already had some notes prepared. But also because he had already had pre -arranged ideas, his speech was very interesting, although he was a little longer.

The third thing I was of a formal point of view is that he, as an American, has gone from Italian to Spanish. It is interesting that it has gone from Italian to another foreign language, because it has so far been in the papal speeches from the balcony of the Basilica of Sts. Peter did not do. The habits were not even the speeches themselves, the Pope just stepped out, people applauded him, he nodded and granted a blessing and left.

John Paul II was the first pope to disrupt this habit by saying a spontaneous speech, and then it was repeated by Benedict XVI, Francis and now Leo XIV. But he was the first Pope to move from Italian to another foreign language, and not to his native English, but to the Spanish he has greatly controlled because he worked in Peru for years. I think it will also be a strong impulse for the Spanish -speaking Catholics that their newly elected Pope directly addressed and encouraged them.

And what message do you read from his speech?
