Christiane Brunner: SP Switzerland forgot death ads
SP Switzerland forgot the death ads for party icons Christiane Brunner
As ex-party president Helmut Hubacher died, the SP Switzerland switched a dozen death ads to appreciate his work. As a party icon Christiane Brunner died, the death ads were forgotten.
She was a party president, Federal Council candidate, powerful trade unionist and glowing feminist: Shortly before Easter, Christiane Brunner’s death meant saying goodbye to one of her most formative characters.
In a media release, the party paid tribute to Brunner’s merits. In radio, television interviews and on social media, the Geneva mourned, who fought for equality like no other and organized the historic women’s strike in 1991. The motto back then: « If women want, everything gets going – if woman wants, everything stands still. »
But one thing was forgotten in the SP general secretariat: the death ads. It is common for parties to say goodbye to former presidents in this way – and thus have one last honor. After the death of ex-party president Helmut Hubacher, the SP Switzerland switched death ads almost five years ago in a dozen newspapers.
In the case of Christiane Brunner, on the other hand, the Geneva cantonal party only recognized its former member in this way. The national party is nowhere listed.
The SP Switzerland speaks of a « failure »
On request, the SP also announced that no death notice was published was « a failure ». A rather embarrassing for the equality party. Finally, the SP wrote in its media release, Christiane Brunner deeply shaped the history of the party, but also that of modern Switzerland, the trade union movement and feminism. Or in other words: Christiane Brunner was an icon. Her non -election to the Federal Council in 1993 was a catalyst for equality in Switzerland. For years thanks to the “Brunner” effect named after her, many women were chosen in legislative and executives.
But the SP does not only forgot the death ads. At the funeral one week after the death of Brunner, nobody was present from the party leadership. The SP justifies this with the Easter holidays and various absences. The party leadership was represented by the Bern SP Councilor Flavia waterfalls, her sign Vice-Group leader. SP Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume Schneider was also at the funeral service in Lausanne to say goodbye to Brunner.
A public commemoration for Brunner is still taking place: on June 12th – two days before the women’s strike, which Brunner initiated for the first time in 1991. The event is organized by the SP Switzerland and the Geneva Cantonal Party.
An opportunity for reparation.
