Parishes in Poland baptize children by « three times immersion »
By default in Poland, children are baptized by sprinkling their heads with holy water. However, several parishes in Poland offer their faithful a somewhat extreme form of greeting in the community of new members. This is a total immersion, joining the sacrament in holy water. « The most significant baptism is made by three -tongue in baptismal water, » describes the « Catechism of the Catholic Church ».
Those shocking for many practices were publicized by the Rasist and Xenophobic Monitoring Monitoring Center. According to its representatives, they tracked at least four parishes in Poland that propose this form of baptism. « In Poland, a fashion for baptism has appeared in several Catholic parishes by flooding a child three times! It is a terribly stupid and dangerous practice – which the child can pay with death. Unfortunately, such cases are already taking place in several European countries » – describes Ombrik. The entry includes a recording from one of such baptisms carried out in Poland. Pictures from the church may arouse anxiety, the baby cries loudly after the procedure.

The doctor has no doubt. « It shouldn’t be done, it’s dangerous »
We asked a doctor what could be the effects of such behavior with tiny children. Doctor Michał Matyjaszczyk has no doubt.
– In my opinion, this should not be done, it is dangerous – he points out in an interview with « Fakt ».
As he notes, such baptisms are not carried out too much, so statistically they do not affect population health, while potentially such immersion of a baby may even end in his death.

Risk
– In theory, tiny children have a reflex of closing nose and mouth and not falling asleep, if they are immersed in water. However, in practice, if an infant takes such a breath, it will fall asleep and can potentially drown secondary. I definitely don’t like this method, I would certainly advise against her parents – the doctor tells us.
He adds that the risk of choking is one thing, while another thing is to expose the child to a cold and develop other infections when we strip them to naked in the usually underheated church.

– I do not want to offend anyone’s religious feelings, but it is idiocy. And it’s not so much dangerous in the sense of life, but health. There is nothing positive about it, and there are potentially a lot of things that can go wrong – emphasizes Michał Matyjaszczyk. He adds that in Poland there are usually baptisms, so such a tiny child is unlikely to remember it, but in a situation, if a child was baptized in this way, even a two -year -old, then he may have a mental injury.
Four years ago, in February 2021, the media wrote about the tragic case of baptism in this way in Romania. The six -week boy died as a result of a heartbreak, and water was found in his lungs. Similar tragedies were also supposed to be there earlier.
