Chinese delegation stood where the tire came down

Þórunn Sveinbjarnardóttir, President of the Althingi, says that an incident where a tire that was released from an airplane and landed on Austurvöllur yesterday is grave and raises questions about the safety of the Althingi from the air. She says the Chinese delegation has stood as the tire came down just a few minutes before.

A number of MPs were in the parliament house when the tire came down and, according to Thorunn, some of them became aware of a great deal. The tire came down to Kirkjustræti in front of the Parliament House before it bounced from the Parliament House.

In the Chinese delegation, the Vice -President of China’s People’s Parliament, Zhang Qingwei, was along with a suite. Þórunn says that the delegation stood on Kirkjustræti and asked for a car train about five minutes before the tire arrived.

« I looked at photo shoots from security cameras and in my mind the incident is very serious. It was a great mild that no one should be on the way across the church when the tire hit the street. It was maybe five minutes before or such that the Chinese delegation was there. We were only ahead of schedule, »
