Chicago workers are credited with marking the first of the world as May 1 as an international labor holiday, dedicated to the fight for the preservation and promotion of workers’ rights, and is in fact a day that honors the victims of the strike held from May 1 to 4, 1886 in Chicago. Then more than tens of thousands of Chicago workers took to the streets, with the sole purpose of introducing an eight -hour day.
At the first Congress of the Second International, held in 1889, it was decided that May Day was a joint holiday in all countries, where workers should manifest unity and solidarity in their demands to improve their position. Since then the holiday has been a manifestation of class solidarity of workers around the world.
May 1st in Macedonia is a public holiday, as in many countries around the world. Until 2006 it was celebrated for two days, on May 1 and 2, and since 2007 it has only been celebrated one day. Usually, in our country this day is used for outdoor outings. Almost every city has its own traditional picnic sites, and these are mostly beautiful green meadows beside the water, where the population lights up the traditional barbecue and spends a song and playing the Labor Day. In other European countries, this day is celebrated in nature, besides camp fire, and in some countries in Northern and Central Europe, the night is coming out of May 1st (Walpurgic Night) and celebrating fertility, drinking and sung long in the night near the burning fires. Unlike this celebration, which has roots in the pagan celebration of nature, in some countries workers ‘unions organize mass protests that highlight new demands for improving workers’ rights.
Although most people will celebrate the free day with a celebration, be sure to respect the true meaning of this holiday.
