In 2026, May 3 falls on the fifth Easter Sunday – a day with a higher rank liturgical character. For this reason, In accordance with the applicable regulations of the Church, the celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Queen of Poland will be moved to Saturday, May 2.
According to the press office of the Polish Episcopal Conference: « The Vatican dykaster for God’s worship and the discipline of the Sacraments allowed that in 2026 the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Poland coincided with the celebration of the Fifth Easter Sunday, was transferred from May 3 to May 2. »
This change applies only to 2026 and is one -off nature. Therefore, this does not mean a permanent postponement of the date of the holiday in subsequent years.
Changes in the liturgical calendar
Changing the date of the Queen of Poland ceremony resulted in additional modifications in the liturgical calendar. The memory of Saint Athanasus, usually falling on May 2, was transferred to May 4. On the same day, the church also recalls St. Floriana, a martyr. Both memories in 2026 will be free.
Such corrections are in line with liturgical principles that assume the hierarchy of celebrations. Higher rank ceremonies, like Sundays of the Easter period, have priority over Christmas and memories.
Mary Queen of Poland: History and the meaning of the holiday
The ceremony of the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Poland is one of the most important Marian holidays in Poland, strongly rooted in national and religious history.
The roots of this holiday should be sought in the 17th century. On April 1, 1656, King Jan Kazimierz, in the face of the difficult situation of the Commonwealth, made solemn weddings in Lviv. Before the image of Our Lady of Grace, he announced Mary the Queen of his countries, and the Kingdom of Poland entrusted her with special protection. He also undertook to act to improve the fate of peasants and bring social justice.
After Poland regained independence in 1918, the Episcopate asked the Holy See to establish a holiday in honor of Mary as the Queen of Poland. It was proposed on May 3 to symbolically connect the holiday with the 3rd May Constitution – the first modern basic act in Europe. This proposal was approved and the holiday was officially entered in the liturgical calendar.
