CDU agrees with coalition agreement and announces ministers

The German Christian Democratic CDU agreed on Monday to the Coalition Agreement, together with Zusterpartij CSU and the Social Democratic SPD. German media report that. The agreement received support from a large majority of the 150 representatives on the ‘small party day’.

Elections took place in Germany on 23 February. At the beginning of April, CDU/CSU and the SPD reached an agreement. After the consent of the Christian Democrats, it is waiting for the SPD, which all its members votes digitally on the coalition agreement. If everything is expected, CDU leader Friedrich Merz will be elected on 6 May as Chancellor of Germany.

Ministerial team

Earlier on Monday, the CDU announced the interpretation of its ministerial posts. For the first time in almost sixty years, the party will deliver a Foreign Minister in the form of Johann Wadephul. Katherina Reiche becomes the new Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy. This makes her responsible for the economic transition (Wirtschaftswende) who wants to achieve the CDU to stimulate the struggling German economy.

The Bundeskanzleramt, the most important advisory body of the Chancellor, will be led by Thorsten Frei. The leader of the Kanzleramt fulfills a ministerial post without his own portfolio. According to German media, Frei is a confidant of Merz.

The CSU, the Bavarian sister party of the CDU, fulfills three ministerial posts in the upcoming government. Alexander Dobrindt becomes the Minister of the Interior. The CSU also supplies the ministers of science and agriculture. Of the ten posts filled in by the Christian Democrats of CDU/CSU, four will be filled in by a woman.

The interpretation of the ministerial posts of coalition partner SPD will be announced on 5 May. German media expect that co-party chairman Lars Klingbeil will become Minister of Finance and Vice-Bondskanselier. It is also expected that Boris Pistorius will remain as Minister of Defense on his current post.
