Catholic Education Flanders has subjected the manuals in the third degree of secondary education to a quality screening. All publishers received feedback, after which they adjust their manuals and digital teaching materials. That is how the bar is higher for students, says the educational umbrella organization on Thursday.

Catholic Education Flanders wants the students to receive good education. « We want our teachers to rely on quality material for this, which makes it clear to them what is being asked of them and what room they have to add their own substantive accents, » says director-general Bruno Vanobbergen. « As an educational provider we bring partners together to make that happen. We are happy that we are working on the same sea with publishers. »

Last school year, the educational dome screened the manuals for the fifth secondary. The publishers that Keure, Lernova, Pelckmans, Plantyn and Van In went to work with the feedback for the re -effect of the manuals for the fifth and the layout of the manuals for the sixth secondary. In December 2024 a new screening was carried out for the teaching resources in the third degree. « That exercise has been completed and our schools got the results, » says Vanobbergen.

He gives an example. « In a French handbook, text structure and sentence structure were too simple for the third degree. After the screening there is a clear structure in difficulty, ranging from texts with a simple text structure and sentence structure to long texts with a certain complexity in terms of sentence structure, text structure and vocabulary, » explains the director-general.

Catholic Education Flanders has been supporting its schools for some time through the preparation of viewing pointers. « That offer was recently discussed more prominently because of the curriculum renewal and the many new digital learning resources that are added. With those viewing poets, schools can take a critical look at manuals with criteria that teachers themselves use, so that schools make the good choice, » says Vanobbergen.

The publishers also support the initiative. For example, Dirk van der Borgt, chairman of the sector federation for educational publishers, also regularly evaluate the manuals in function of the minimum goals and the curricula. « In this way we work on learning resources that effectively strengthen the quality of education in Flanders, » he says.
