Cathedrals, cross, river – how much can the head of a chancellor

The head is bronze, 2.30 meters high and weighs 400 kg. Head like no other. Cathedrals, hands tied with rope, eagle, cross, river …

It is located on the boulevard known to the Union of East with West Germany as the car racing route. Thus, the residents of Bonn called the « Adenauer Allea », where numerous embassies were located and residences and where diplomats developed unauthorized speeds for which they were not sanctioned because of their status.

Now all this is in the past, and on the sidewalk, on the side of which are former and current government buildings – after the association, 6 ministries remain in Bonn. The head is in front of the former Chancellor.

The author of the sculpture is Hubertus von Pilgrim. He was tasked with immortalizing the first chancellor to hold the post between 1949 and 1963. It was responsible for leading the restoration of West Germany after World War II.

Placed there in 1982, the sculpture is often used by guides and organizers of discussions related to German politics and history. The development is funded by donations collected by a special committee.

The entire back of the head fits several embossed images related to Adenauer. Among them are:

  • Cross that embodies the Christian faith (Adenauer is an zealous Catholic)
  • Cologne Cathedral for the fact that Adenauer was mayor of Cologne
  • Prussian eagle that reminds him that he was headed by the Prussian State Council
  • Tied with rope hands that reminiscent of Nazism with whose heritage and he had to cope with
  • Reims Cathedral as a symbol of reconciliation with France
  • A pink bush because of his favorite flower and reminiscent of Germany’s recovery
  • Talking Chancellors of postwar Germany
  • Europe with the bull
  • Rhine and Zibeberge for connection with their native places.

Not far from the sculpture today is the Museum of Natural History. It was there that was Adenauer’s first cabinet. Initially, the idea was that it was a private institute for zoological studies, founded by Alexander König, the son of a wealthy trader. He later decided to turn him into a museum in which to present his gathering of birds and other animals. The unfinished building was used during the First World War as a military hospital, then housed the French occupation forces. Koenig, who loses his wealth during the war, donates the Museum of the State. He eventually opened her doors in 1934.

After the Second World War, during which the building remained almost intact, it turned out to be the only representative in Bonn, which became the capital of West Germany. Therefore, it was used by parliament for his first session. Photos of that time show how the exhibited animals were concealed with curtains, with special effort required the hiding of the giraffe. At that time, the plans were to use the building for the office of the Chancellor. Conrad Adenauer worked in the office there for 2 months in 1949.
