Mice in the house. Few are getting wild. But the hunt for the tiny four -legged friends has been restricted since the beginning of this year. « Since January 1, it is no longer permitted to kill mice, but also rats, through glue traps via the Flemish Codex Animal Welfare, » said the cabinet of Minister of Animal Welfare Ben Weyts (N-VA).
Read too. The « mouse season » reaches its peak, as you fight them: « First do a few days to ‘prebaiten' » «
What should you imagine with such glue traps? « On the one hand, it is about tubes with glue, and on the other hand, plates that are strokes with glue, » says Kristof Baert, expert at the Institute for Nature and Forest Research. « The intention is to apply the glue, or to lay the glue plates where you have seen mice walk in the house. »
« Sometimes they gnaw their stuck legs, or they stitch because their snout gets stuck in the glue »

He is also talking about a « very animal -unfriendly way » of catching mice. « The animals get stuck in the glue, after which they die of the stress. Sometimes they gnaw their stuck legs, or they stitch because their snout also gets stuck in the glue. »

Ban on advertising
The intention is that the prohibition on the use of such glue traps will soon be expanded to a sales and advertising offer. « We are still waiting for an advice from the Flemish Council for Animal Welfare, » said the Weyts cabinet. But the intention is that the prohibition on the trade in glue traps and the publicity for it next year, at the latest the following year.
According to Baert, glue traps have no added value compared to other mouse traps. « The classic mouse clamp still appears to be the most efficient way to catch mice. It is less cruel than a glue fall or the fight against mice with poison. »
Animal rights organization GAIA also points out that when the glue traps are used outside, birds or bats regularly end up in the glue and die.
