It is still rows to the prison of Bruges, where the fire brigade sprayed cars on the assembly line after the heavy fire in a bicycle shop. A lot of asbestos particles were released due to the fire. No less than 20,000 liters of water was used on one morning. « I take it for sure, » says one of the local residents.

The fire may be two days ago, yet a lot of cars are still being reviewed on the Legeweg in Sint-Andries. A few firefighters are ready to rinse cars of people who were in the perimeter. Due to the heavy fire at the Descheemaecker bicycle shop, a lot of asbestos particles were released and they ended up on the road, in gardens but also on cars.

Yet they are most of the cars that pass on Monday … clean. « The cars are no longer very dirty, » says the fire brigade. “People prefer to take the uncertainty. They just keep on joining.  »

Certain for the uncertain

From the roundabout it is all day for the 'Carwash'. Moreover, no less than 20,000 liters of water were used on one morning. Arno Decouttere (26) is one of the local residents who await his turn. « I read that the fire brigade is still spraying cars today and then decided to come here, » says the local resident. « You never know. »

A little further on Anissa (21) also waits for her car to get a shower. « We live near the fire and were instructed to stay inside as much as possible, » says De Inlentiger. “We did that. But today we wanted to let our car rinse. I take it for the uncertainty. «

You can also deposit soot parts and burned insulation material on the Legeweg. Residents outside the red zone that remains remnants can simply clean this up themselves. « You can throw it away yourself in the garbage bin or come out at the height of the prison if desired, » the city council says. « This material is asbestos safe and therefore not harmful to public health. »
