Most of the masks were from primary and secondary schools, and over 600 participants profiled before the jury. The most successful masks followed awards.
Opening the carnival, the Mayor of Prilep Borce Jovcheski said that
Today, in the spirit of centuries -old tradition, the Feast of Forgiveness is again celebrated.
– Forgiveness is not only a custom, but a deep manifestation of our love, unity and forgiveness. At this important point, we, Prilep, connect with each other and forgive ourselves, a message that is woven with our own threads of our history and our customs.
This tradition is also part of Macedonia's collective culture.
« Forgive me » is the message we convey with sincerity, and we get « forgiven to be » as a sign of union and love. By respecting and nurturing traditions, we create a strong community that knows how to forgive and support – said Mayor Jovcheski, demanding forgiveness from Prilep.
Tonight the younger ones go to the older homes to ask for forgiveness with the words « forgive me » and receive an answer « forgiven by me and God ».
Carnival activities end tomorrow with a festive lunch at the St. George Monastery.
