Cardinal Dziwisz will not choose the Pope. The reason is obvious
There are five Poles in the group of cardinals choosing the pope. But only four of them will be able to take part in the conclave. Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz is excluded from this group by church law.
When is the conclave after the Pope’s death?
The conclave usually starts from 15 to 20 days from Pope’s funeral. Then cardinals from around the world gather in the Vatican to choose a new bishop of Rome. What does this process look like and who can become a pope? We explain step by step.
The cardinal college has 253 members. But not all of them have the right to choose a new pope. There are only 138 such electors.
Five members of the cardinal college are Poles. Four of which are cardinals-elector. The oldest of them and the most experienced, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, has no vote because of age. Cardinals are deprived of it from the machine when they reach the age of 80.
Four other Polish cardinals will be able to vote:
- Stanisław Ryłko He is almost 80 years old, but he has not yet crossed this border. He was born on July 4, 1945. This is the Basilica Archives of the Larger Mother in Rome. He has been a cardinal since 2007, and was created by Pope Benedict XVI).
- Konrad Krajewski (born on November 25, 1963) created as a cardinal by Pope Francis.
- Kazimierz Nycz(born on February 1, 1950), Warsaw senior archbishop, created as a cardinal by Benedict XVI.
- Grzegorz Ryś(born on February 9, 1964), Archbishop of the Łódź Metropolitan. He has been a cardinal since 2023 from the creation of Pope Francis). He is the youngest in this group.
Stanisław Jan Dziwisz (born April 27, 1939 in Raba Wyżna) – Polish Roman Catholic priest, doctor of theology, secretary and chaplain of the Archbishop of Metropolitan Karol Wojtyła. He got the cardinal nomination from Pope Benedict XVI. He is 85 years old.
In Monday’s homily, Cardinal Dziwisz expressed gratitude to the Pope for his deep faith, unwavering hope, love and service to the Church and the world at a time when war is fought.
– The Pope cared for the most difficult matters of the world, did not run away from them, did not close his eyes. The Holy Father urged the responsible, to their consciences, to interrupt the spiral of hatred and violence, he hurried with the help of the victims of conflicts, he prayed especially about the tired Ukraine and for reminding the raising his hand to other people, destroying human houses, schools and hospitals, breaking internally, digging up between nations – said Card. Dziwisz.
How long does the conclave last? It depends on the choice of the new pope
From the moment of the Pope’s death to the choice of his successor, the Church’s management has been taken over by the College of Cardinals. The duration of the conclave depends on how quickly the cardinals reached the agreement – in history it happened that votes dragged for many weeks or even months.
After each turn of voting from the chimney above the Sistine chapel, smoke floats, which is taken twice a day after burning voting cards. Black smoke means no choice, while white announces to the world that a new pope has been chosen.
