Car manufacturers get still time to download CO2 emissions
Car manufacturers will receive three years instead of one to comply with the new Limits for CO2 emissions from cars and vans.
After a long hesitation, the European Commission decided to give the delay requested by manufacturers who are lagging behind Chinese and American competitors in electric vehicles. This loads their carbon footprint, threatening them with fines for deviation from emission standards.
According to the proposed changes published on Tuesday, the EU will base compliance with the CO2 rules for 2025 of the average emissions of the automaker for the period 2025-2027, not just this year.
« With today’s initiative, we provide more flexibility to this key sector and at the same time remain in the course of our climate goal, » said Commission President Ursula von der Lyen.
Stronger restrictions on carbon dioxide emissions for car manufacturers came into force at the beginning of the year, which requires at least one fifth of all sales to be electric vehicles to fit into them.
The proposal from Tuesday to correct the law requires approval by the European Parliament and EU countries, which may propose further changes. The Czech Republic, a car production center, has previously stated that it will insist on a five-year period of conformity.

Not all manufacturers want a delay. The Volvo car division, which is a majority ownership of the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Geely, has warned not to be adversely stated by companies that have already invested in cleaner engines to fulfill the goals. However, Volkswagen and Renault welcomed the course of the European Commission.
The E-Mobility Europe Industrial Electric Transport Group has warned that the delay will increase Europe’s lagging behind electric cars to China and delay investments in building stations for charging them.
