Car manufacturers get more time for EU climate specifications

Europe’s carmaker are getting more time to meet EU climate specifications. In a last step, the EU countries in Brussels nodded a loosening of the specifications for CO₂ emissions per car, according to which limit values do not have to be observed annually. Instead, the manufacturers get three years for this. This initially does not face any punishments.

Previously, both the European Parliament and the EU countries had followed a corresponding loosening proposal by the European Commission. The new rules are now published in the EU-Amtsblatt and come into force 20 days later.

If VW, Mercedes, BMW or other companies exceed CO₂ specifications this year, they are not automatically asked to checkout. You can completely avoid punishments if you overfill the EU rules in the two following years.

Average value of CO₂ emissions per car allowed

The background of the impending penalties for the already battered auto industry are the so -called fleet limit values. They allow an average value of CO₂ emissions per car. At the beginning of the year, these legal requirements tightened.

On average of all vehicles from a manufacturer approved in the EU in one year, a limit must not be exceeded. The carmakers have to pay a penalty for too much CO₂. Because, among other things, sales for electric cars have not developed as well as expected, the limit values could be significantly exceeded.
