Car -free city center in Vienna will probably take a year – Diepresse.com
Transport Minister Hanke has announced a corresponding amendment. From the perspective of traffic planner Emberger, traffic calming was long overdue.
The implementation of a traffic calming in a city such as Vienna will take a year. After Transport Minister Peter Hanke (SPÖ) announced a corresponding amendment on Sunday had the first corresponding considerations on Monday. The amendment to the law should only come into force on January 1, 2026. It will take another year before a traffic -calmed city can be realized, as traffic planner Günter Emberger says.
Emberger from the Vienna University of Technology explained in the « Ö1-Mittnagjournal » that the step was long overdue from a traffic planner perspective. Other cities such as Paris are already much further in this planning. In traffic -calmed zones, the quality of life would be increased, depending on the type of implementation, traffic would decrease by 30 to 50 percent. As a result, the need for parking spaces would decrease and more trees could be planted there for cooling the city, said Emberger to Ö1.
No loss for business
The expert did not accept the concerns of the FPÖ that traffic calming would be at the expense of the shops. « Empirical you can prove that purchasing power is promoted, » said Emberger. The stroll would do more business.
Hanke’s party colleague, Vienna’s traffic councilor Ulli Sima, also explained in the « Kurier » that implementation would take about a year. The Europe -wide tender can only start after the amendment came into force. After that, the company in question must first produce everything required. « Nobody has anything like that, » said Sima to the « Kurier ». At the same time, the city had to start with the structural preparations that would also take time. (APA)
