A motorist ended up with his car partly in the house of the Mechelaar on Thursday morning. The man drove one of the large stained glass windows. Afterwards he fled on foot, but could be caught quickly.
The striking accident happened around four o’clock Thursday morning along the Befferstraat side. The driver of a car lost control of his steering wheel and drove against one of the large windows of the Mechelaar’s house. That went through the impact and also inside the collision caused some havoc.
The driver clambed his car and made it run. « He ran towards Grote Markt and could be stopped there by some police officers. But he behaved aggressively and four police officers were slightly injured in his interception. The person concerned himself was also slightly injured, » says Elke Wauters of police zone Rivierenland.

The man was taken to the commissariat and received medical concerns there. The cause of the accident is still unclear for the time being. After the hoisting works, the debris were cleaned up and the window closed by the fire brigade with a large wooden panel.
