Car drives into a crowd in Stuttgart – at least one person dies

It happens on one of the first warm evenings in downtown Stuttgart: At the central light rail stop at Olgaeck, people are waiting for the next train after the end of the day when a black off-road vehicle suddenly bends around the corner and drives into a crowd. At least eight people are injured, a 46-year-old succumbed to her injuries late in the evening.

The remains of the material of the rescue workers can still be seen in photos: plastic gloves, bags, bandages. There is also a folded stroller at the scene of the accident, to what extent children were involved, a police spokesman cannot initially say.

The slightly injured people treat the emergency services in a kind of bus from the fire brigade, gradually people can leave it again and are led away. Fire brigade, rescue workers and police work in a spacious area and hang the place of the incident with tarpaulins for privacy protection.

According to initial investigations, the incident is in all likelihood an accident. « We are starting an accident at the moment, but we are investigating in all directions, » says a spokesman. You can never rule out an amoking, you can’t look into people’s heads.

Car comes to a stop on a pedestrian path

According to police, the driver of the car, a 42 -year -old man, is arrested and questioned. The exact background is still unclear. It is also not known how quickly the car drove into the crowd. According to a police spokeswoman, accident specialists look at the location of the action, witnesses are interrogated.

The incident occurs at 5:50 p.m. at the Olgaeck subway stop. The vehicle comes to a standstill there partly on the street, partly on the area where pedestrians otherwise have to wait at the traffic light. The actually stable metal railing behind it is bent.

According to the initial knowledge of the police, the man turns to the right from a single-lane side street to the right-wing, multi-lane federal road and drives into the group of people, which probably comes from the Stadtbahn stop.

Rails no longer ride

The stop is in the middle. On this side, the road leads out of the valley kettle out of the city, on the other side into the city. The scene of the accident is located outside the downtown, partly traffic -calmed, east of the city ring. Several important subway lines drive off at the above-ground stop.

In the evening, the traffic situation at the important hub is slowly normalizing. After the road and the railway line were temporarily completely closed and neither vehicles nor trains could pass, the police initially released the opposite lane again in the evening. The accident site also passes again.

In the evening, a tow truck invites the accident vehicle – according to the police to a black Mercedes -G class – and transport it. The Mercedes G class is a kind of off-road vehicle.
